• In 1907, The Indian Mercantile Insurance Ltd. was settled up as the first company to transact all classes of general insurance business.

• In 1912, The Indian Life Assurance Companies Act came into existence as the first statute to regulate thelife insurance industry.

• In 1928, The Indian Insurance Companies Act enabled the government to collect statistical information about both life and non-life insurance businesses In India.

• In 1938, the legislations made earlier were consolidated and amended by the Insurance Act with an objective to protect the interests of the insuring public. 

• In 1956, A major initiation by theGovernment of India to amalgamate245 Indian and foreign insurers and provident societies and nationalized. LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) was formed by an Act of Parliament namely LIC Act,1956, with a capital contribution of Rs. 5 crores from the Government of India. 

• In 1957,, Insurance Association of India started a wing namely General Insurance Council to frame a code of conduct for ensuring sound business practices and fair conduct.

• In 1968, Amendments are made inThe Insurance Act to regulate investments and set minimum solvency margins and the Tariff Advisory Committee was also set up.

• In 1972, the general insurance business in India was nationalized under the General Insurance Business Act, 1972 with effect from1st January 1973. 

• In 1972, the Formation of 4 major pillars in Insurance industry viz. the National Insurance Company Ltd., the New India Assurance Company Ltd., the Oriental Insurance Company Ltd., and the United India Insurance Company Ltd as a result of an amalgamation of 107 insurers.GIC incorporated as a company.

Insurance Notes for LIC AAO 2015-16: LIC (Brief Description & History)

Overview:

IRDA (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) is the key regulator of Insurance Industry in India. One of the major players in the Indian Insurance Industry is the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). LIC is the country’s largest investor and the largest state-owned life insurance Company within the country till date. It is fully owned by the Government of India. It funds almost 24.5% of total expenses made by the Indian Government. LIC is having almost an asset backup of approximately 9.3 trillion INR (206.6 billion US$)

History:

The stepping stone of Insurance Industry in India was held with the formation of The Oriental Life Insurance Company, the first corporate entity in India offering life insurance coverage. It was established in Calcutta by Bipin Bernard Dasgupta and others in1818. Initially, the primary target of this company was the Europeans settled in India and it charged heavy premiums from Indians. Other major member includes The Bombay Mutual Life Assurance Society, formed in 1870. It was the first native insurance provider. Other establishments within the insurance industry in the pre-independence era included:

• United India (1906)
• National Indian (1906)

India’s first 150 years were marked remarkably due to various reasons as India witnessed First War of Independence, effects of the World War I followed by World War II and in between them the period of worldwide economic crises put in a great depression. 

These events cumulatively resulted in the high rate of bankruptcies and liquidation of life insurance companies in India. This liquidated the people’s faith in the utility of obtaining life cover. 

In order to rebuild the people’s faith,Life Insurance Act and the Provident Fund Act were passed in 1912, as the first regulatory mechanisms in the Life Insurance industry. 

The Indian Insurance Companies Act of 1928 authorized the government to obtain statistical information from companies operating in both life and non-life insurance areas. 

A similar Insurance Act of 1938 brought larger control over an industry that had seen several financially unsound ventures fail. In 1944, a bill was introduced in the Legislative Assembly to nationalize the Insurance Industry.

The LIC was set up as a result in 1956 as a result of an amalgamation of more than 200 insurance companies and provident societies.

LIC is Headquartered in Mumbai-

The financial and commercial capital of India, the Life Insurance Corporation of India currently has 8 zonal Offices and 101 divisional offices located in different parts of India, at least 2048 branches located in different cities and towns of India along with satellite Offices attached to about some 50 Branches, and has a network of around 1.2 million agents for soliciting life insurance business from the public.

A 

 Access  time  -  The  amount  of  time  it  takes  for requested information to be delivered from disks and memory. 
 Antivirus software -  A program designed to look for and destroy viruses that may infect the  memory  of a computer or files stored on a computer. 
 Artificial intelligence (AI)  -  Computer systems  that attempt to imitate human processes for analyzing and solving problems. 
 Accumulator  -  A local storage area called a Register, in which the result of an arithmetic or logic operation is formed.

 BIT -  It is basic unit of computers .It has two values 1 & 0 only. 

 BYTE - Combination of 8 Bits. 

 Basic Input Output System (BIOS)  -  Also known as ROM  BIOS.  It  provides  a  abstraction  layer  for  the hardware,  i.e.,  a  consistent  way  for  application programs  and  operating  system  to  interact  with input/output devices. 

 Bug -  A software bug is an error, flaw, failure, or fault in  a  computer  program  or  system  produces  an incorrect or unexpected result. 

 Bus -  A pathway along which electronic signals travel between the components of a computer system.

 Cookie - A packet of information that travels between a browser and the web server.  

 Crash  -  Your  computer  or  application  no  longer works  correctly  and  so  you  “loose”  all  the  work you’ve done since the last time you saved. 

 Command  -  An instruction that causes a program or computer to perform a function. 

 Cache  -  It  is  a  memory  storage  area  that  keeps frequent use data readily available to the computer so that  the computer does  not  retrieve them from slow storage devices. 

 Clock Speed -  The speed of computer is measured in clock  speed.  High  clock  speed  is  synonymous  with high  processing  capability.  It  is  measured  in Megahertz (MHz).

 Flash Memory -  It is a type of non-volatile computer storage  chip  that  can  be  electrically  erased  and  reprogrammed. It was developed by EEPROM.

 Gateway  -  A  machine that links two networks using different protocols. 

 Gigabyte  -  A measurement of the storage capacity of a device. One gigabyte represents 1024 megabytes. 

 Google – search engine on the web. 

 Gopher  -  A  protocol  used  for  locating  and  transferring  information  on  the  internet.  It  is  an  internet  search  tool  that  allows  users  to  access textual information. 

 GUI  -  Graphical User Interface uses icons and menus to  carry  out  commands  such  as  opening  files  ,delete files , move files etc.. 

 Graphic  Interchange  Format  (GIF)  -  A  simple  file  format  for  pictures  and  photographs,  that  are  compressed so that they can be sent quickly.

 Hard copy  -  Text or graphics printed on paper; also  called a printout.  

 Hard disk - A rigid type of magnetic medium that can store large amounts of information. 

 Hyperlink - An image or portion of text on a webpage which is linked to another webpage. 

 Hub  -  A  network  device  that  connects  multiple computers  on  a  LAN  so  that  they  can  communicate with another network and the internet. 

 Header  -  Repetitive  information  that  appears  at  the top (the head) of every page of a document.
